05Careers
A mechanical design engineer turns a product idea into accurate 3D models, assemblies and 2D manufacturing drawings.
Day to day: revise designs based on feedback from manufacturing, quality and testing teams; check assemblies for interference, clearance and motion before prototypes are made.
Skills employers ask for: Design for manufacture and assembly (DFM/DFA); GD&T and tolerance stack-up basics; 3D part and assembly modelling in SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo or NX.
Where careers start: Trainee / CAD Draughtsman.
An SAP FICO consultant sets up and supports the finance side of SAP, the ERP system used by many large companies.
Day to day: set up accounts payable, receivable and asset accounting; support month-end and year-end closing activities.
Skills employers ask for: SAP S/4HANA Financial Accounting configuration; Documentation and user training; General ledger, AP and AR processes.
Where careers start: SAP End User / Trainee.
An MEP / BIM engineer models the mechanical, electrical and plumbing services of a building in 3D and makes sure they all fit together.
Day to day: follow design drawings and BIM execution plans for model accuracy; update models as design changes and keep families and standards organised.
Skills employers ask for: MEP design concepts (HVAC, plumbing, fire-fighting, electrical); Reading architectural and structural drawings; Quantity take-off basics.
Where careers start: BIM Modeller (MEP).
