01What is AutoCAD

What is AutoCAD? In plain words.

AutoCAD is computer-aided design and drafting software from Autodesk. It replaces the drawing board: you draw lines, arcs, circles and polylines with exact coordinates, then add dimensions, text, hatching and title blocks to make drawings ready for print or PDF. Layers, blocks, attributes and external references keep large drawings organised, and it also includes 3D solid and surface modelling tools and AutoLISP for automating repeated tasks.

AutoCAD is one of the most widely used drafting tools in India across civil, architectural, mechanical and electrical work. Building plans, site layouts, machine part drawings, panel layouts and plant drawings are routinely made or exchanged as DWG files. That is why so many job ads for draughtsmen, site engineers and design engineers list AutoCAD first. It is often the first CAD tool an engineering or diploma student learns, and it is used almost every day in consultancy and contractor offices.

Construction around Vellore and Katpadi, the SIPCOT industrial estate and BHEL unit in Ranipet, and factories along the Chennai–Bengaluru corridor all rely on AutoCAD drawings. For the many engineering and diploma students in the district, it is often the first CAD skill employers check.
