02Inside the course

What the AutoCAD internship builds on

AutoCAD is computer-aided design and drafting software from Autodesk. It replaces the drawing board: you draw lines, arcs, circles and polylines with exact coordinates, then add dimensions, text, hatching and title blocks to make drawings ready for print or PDF.

Working through AutoCAD, you will learn to apply engineering drawing basics such as projections, views, sheet sizes and title blocks, draw accurately using coordinates, snaps, grid, polar tracking and dynamic input and edit drawings with move, copy, offset, trim, extend, array, fillet and grip editing.

You will work with AutoCAD 2D drafting and editing tools, Dimension, text, table and leader styles and Layers, layer states and filters; the Essential in AutoCAD programme includes modules such as Fundamentals of Engineering Drawing, Introduction to AutoCAD and Drafting Settings and Basic Drawing.

Roles to aim for include AutoCAD Draughtsman – prepares and updates 2D drawings from sketches, surveys or engineer mark-ups and Civil / Architectural Draughtsman – draws building plans, elevations, sections and working drawings. Basic computer use is enough to start. Knowledge of engineering drawing and projections helps, but the course begins with those fundamentals.
