How to become a Automotive Design Engineer
Design body, interior and chassis parts for cars and trucks. See the CATIA skills, salary and path into automotive design.
01The role
What does a Automotive Design Engineer do?
An automotive design engineer designs the parts that make up a vehicle, such as body-in-white panels, plastic interior trims, brackets, seating structures or chassis components. They build detailed surface and solid models, follow the vehicle's packaging space, apply design rules for sheet metal or plastic moulding, and check fit with neighbouring parts using digital mock-up (DMU). Every design must meet cost, weight, safety and manufacturing targets.
Chennai is often called the Detroit of India, with OEMs and hundreds of component suppliers around Sriperumbudur, Oragadam and Hosur, all reachable from Vellore. Engineering-services companies in Chennai and Bengaluru also run large automotive design teams for global carmakers. CATIA is the most common tool in this space, so strong CATIA surfacing, part design and DMU skills, backed by GD&T, give freshers a clear advantage.
A typical day

- Work with class-A surfaces from styling to build engineering parts
- Run DMU clash and clearance checks within the vehicle package
- Apply design rules for draft, rib, boss and flange features
- Prepare 2D drawings with GD&T for supplier release
- Join design reviews with suppliers, CAE and manufacturing teams

05FAQ
Automotive Design Engineer – FAQ
Still have a question? The counsellor at the centre you prefer replies on WhatsApp.
Ask on WhatsAppWhy is CATIA so common in automotive design?
Many global carmakers standardised on CATIA for its strong surfacing and large-assembly tools, so their suppliers and service partners use it too.
What is DMU and why does it matter?
Digital mock-up lets you put all parts together in 3D to check clashes, clearances and assembly paths before any tool is made. It saves huge cost.
Can mechanical engineers get automotive design jobs?
Yes. Most automotive designers are mechanical graduates who added CATIA, plastic or sheet metal design and GD&T skills.
Are there automotive jobs near Vellore?
The big automotive clusters are Sriperumbudur, Oragadam and Hosur, which are within reach of Vellore. Chennai and Bengaluru host many design centres.
Is EV knowledge useful for automotive design?
Yes. EV programmes need new battery housings, brackets and packaging layouts, so basic EV knowledge adds value to a design profile.
Where can I train to become a Automotive Design Engineer near Vellore?
