01The role

What does a CNC / CAM Programmer do?

A CNC / CAM programmer converts a 3D model into toolpaths and G-code that a CNC lathe, milling machine or machining centre can follow. They choose cutting tools, speeds, feeds and the order of operations, then simulate the program to avoid collisions and wasted material. The aim is simple: produce accurate parts in the shortest safe cycle time. Good programmers understand both the software on the screen and the machine on the shop floor.

CNC machining is the backbone of auto-component, die-and-mould, aerospace and general engineering units across Chennai, Sriperumbudur, Hosur and Ranipet's SIPCOT estate. Many programmers start as CNC operators or setters and move up once they learn CAM tools such as Mastercam or NX CAM. ITI and diploma holders do especially well here because hands-on machine knowledge is valued as much as software skill.

A typical day

  • Study part drawings and 3D models to plan machining operations
  • Create 2D and 3D milling and turning toolpaths in Mastercam or NX CAM
  • Select tools, holders, speeds, feeds and depths of cut
  • Simulate programs to check for gouges, collisions and missed material
  • Post-process toolpaths into machine-ready G-code and prepare setup sheets
  • Support machine setters during first-piece runs and optimise cycle time

Skills you need

  • Reading engineering drawings, tolerances and GD&T
  • 2D and 3D CAM toolpath creation
  • Mastercam or NX CAM operations
  • G-code and M-code basics
  • Cutting tools, materials and machining parameters
  • Fixturing and work-holding methods
  • Toolpath simulation and verification
  • Measuring instruments and first-piece inspection

05FAQ

CNC / CAM Programmer – FAQ

Still have a question? The counsellor at the centre you prefer replies on WhatsApp.

Ask on WhatsApp
Can an ITI holder become a CAM programmer?

Yes. ITI machinists who know machines well often become excellent programmers once they learn a CAM tool and drawing reading.

Do I still need to learn G-code if I use CAM software?

Yes, at least the basics. You will need to read and edit programs at the machine and understand what the post-processor produces.

Is Mastercam or NX CAM better to learn?

Mastercam is very common in job shops and tool rooms. NX CAM is popular in larger OEMs and aerospace. Either gives a solid base.

Is CNC programming only for men?

No. Programming is mostly desk and simulation work with some shop-floor support, and women programmers work in many machining companies.

What does a CNC programmer's portfolio look like?

Show a few parts with the model, toolpath screenshots, setup sheet and cycle time. A turned part, a 2.5D milled part and a 3D surface part make a good mix.
