How to become a HVAC Design Engineer
Design the cooling, heating and ventilation systems buildings depend on. Learn heat load, duct design and Revit MEP skills.
01The role
What does a HVAC Design Engineer do?
An HVAC design engineer plans heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems for offices, hospitals, malls, hotels, factories and homes. They calculate heat loads, choose the right type and size of equipment, design duct and chilled-water pipe networks and make sure every room gets the correct air quantity and fresh air. Their drawings and schedules guide contractors on site and help clients control both comfort and energy bills.
Demand comes from real estate, IT parks, hospitals, data centres and industrial projects, and from MEP consultancies in Chennai, Bengaluru and the Gulf. Vellore itself has large hospitals and colleges that rely on well-designed HVAC systems. Employers expect clear knowledge of psychrometry, heat-load methods and duct sizing, plus the ability to model and coordinate systems in Revit MEP alongside electrical and plumbing teams.
A typical day
- Calculate cooling and heating loads for each zone of a building
- Select air-handling units, fan coil units, chillers or VRF systems
- Size and route ducts, diffusers and chilled-water piping
- Model HVAC systems in Revit MEP and coordinate with other services
- Prepare drawings, equipment schedules and bill of quantities
- Support site teams with technical queries and testing and balancing
Skills you need
- Psychrometry and thermodynamics basics
- Heat-load calculation methods
- Duct sizing and air distribution design
- Chilled-water and VRF system concepts
- Revit MEP modelling
- AutoCAD HVAC drafting
- Ventilation and fresh-air standards (ASHRAE, NBC)
- Energy efficiency awareness

The courses to take, in order
Start with the first course; add the next when you are ready. Each links to its full syllabus.
AutoCAD Course
Learn AutoCAD to draw accurate 2D plans and machine drawings, manage layers and blocks, plot to scale and build basic 3D models. 2 levels · 40–80 h
HVAC Design Course
Learn to calculate cooling loads, size ducts and pumps, and draft HVAC layouts that site teams and consultants can actually use. 1 level · 40 h
MEP Design Concepts Course
Understand how buildings are cooled, protected from fire and supplied with water – the design basics behind every MEP drawing. 1 level · 80 h
Revit (Architecture, Structure & MEP) Course
Model buildings in Revit – walls to rebar to ducts – and produce coordinated plans, schedules and sheets from one BIM model. 5 levels · 40–80 h
Navisworks & 5D BIM Course
Combine BIM models, find clashes, simulate construction sequences and take off quantities for cost using Autodesk Navisworks. 2 levels · 40 h

05FAQ
HVAC Design Engineer – FAQ
Still have a question? The counsellor at the centre you prefer replies on WhatsApp.
Ask on WhatsAppWhat is a heat-load calculation?
It estimates how much heat enters a space from sun, walls, people, lights and equipment, so you can size the air-conditioning correctly.
Why is Revit MEP important for HVAC engineers?
Most large projects now use BIM. Revit MEP lets you model ducts and pipes in 3D and check clashes with structure and other services.
Can a refrigeration technician become an HVAC designer?
Yes. Field experience is valuable. Adding design basics, AutoCAD and Revit MEP helps technicians move into design roles.
Are there HVAC jobs in the Gulf for Indian engineers?
Gulf construction projects regularly hire HVAC designers from India, usually after a few years of experience here.
Is HVAC design a stable career?
Almost every new commercial building, hospital and data centre needs HVAC, so demand stays steady across economic cycles.
