01What is HVAC Design

What is HVAC Design? In plain words.

HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. HVAC design is the engineering work of deciding how much cooling or fresh air a building needs, choosing the right system – split, package, VRF or chilled water – and then sizing the ducts, pipes, fans and pumps that deliver it. The designer works with psychrometric charts, heat load sheets, software such as HAP and duct sizers, and AutoCAD drawings that go to the site.

Every mall, hospital, IT office, hotel, data centre and factory needs a working HVAC system, so MEP consultants, HVAC contractors and equipment makers hire engineers who can do load calculations and duct layouts without hand-holding. Employers ask for this skill because a wrong load estimate means oversized plant, wasted power or rooms that never get cool, and fixing that after installation is expensive.

Vellore district sits on the Chennai–Bengaluru corridor, where hospitals, colleges, IT parks and factories all run large HVAC systems. The SIPCOT estate at Ranipet and projects around Chennai and Sriperumbudur give local learners realistic HVAC site and design openings.

What you will be able to do

  • Read a psychrometric chart and find DBT, WBT, RH and dew point for a given air condition
  • Explain the vapour compression cycle and the role of each refrigeration component
  • Choose between package AC, VRV/VRF, DX and chilled water systems for a project
  • Calculate cooling and heating loads using design conditions, U-values and HAP software
  • Size ducts using the equal friction method and a duct sizer, and work out external static pressure
  • Calculate ventilation and exhaust air for toilets, kitchens and car parks
  • Select pumps, coils and cooling towers using basic head and capacity calculations
  • Draft HVAC layouts in AutoCAD, including ducting, AHU rooms, kitchen hoods and car-park ventilation

02Why learn it

Why learn HVAC Design now?

Six reasons students and professionals in Vellore district pick this skill.

Demand in every building project

Commercial buildings, hospitals and factories all need air conditioning and ventilation, so HVAC design work keeps coming across construction cycles.

Core MEP skill

HVAC is one of the three pillars of MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing), and it is often the first role mechanical graduates get in building services.

Calculation plus drafting

You learn both the engineering (heat load, ESP, pump head) and the drawing side (AutoCAD duct layouts), which makes you useful from day one.

Real system knowledge

Package AC, VRV/VRF, chillers, cooling towers and district cooling are all covered, so you can talk confidently with vendors and site engineers.

Short, focused programme

Forty hours covers the working essentials, so you can finish it alongside college or a job.

Gulf and India opportunities

HVAC design and drafting skills are asked for by consultants in Chennai, Bengaluru and also by Middle East MEP firms.

03Who can learn

Who can join this course?

BE/BTech Mechanical students

Adds a practical building-services skill that many core mechanical jobs expect.

Diploma in Mechanical Engineering holders

A direct route into HVAC drafting and site-support roles.

ITI and RAC technicians

Helps AC technicians understand the design side and move towards estimation or supervision work.

Civil and architecture graduates

Useful for anyone coordinating MEP services in building projects.

MEP draughtsmen

Moves you from tracing drawings to understanding the calculations behind them.

Site and maintenance engineers

Gives the theory behind the chillers, AHUs and ducts you already work with.

Job seekers targeting MEP consultancies

Builds the load-calculation and duct-sizing basics that interviewers usually test.

Before you start: Basic computer use and some familiarity with AutoCAD commands will help. A mechanical background (thermodynamics, heat transfer basics) makes the calculations easier, but the course explains each concept from the start.
