01What is PDMS (Piping Design)

What is PDMS (Piping Design)? In plain words.

PDMS (Plant Design Management System) is a 3D plant design software from AVEVA. Piping designers use it to build a full digital model of a process plant – equipment, nozzles, pipes, valves, fittings and supports – organised into sites and zones. From that model the software checks for clashes, generates pipe isometrics and spool drawings, prepares general arrangement drawings and produces material take-off reports.

PDMS and its successor AVEVA E3D are used by EPC contractors and design consultants working on refineries, petrochemical plants, power stations, chemical, fertiliser and pharma units. Employers ask for PDMS because piping is often the largest part of plant engineering, and a clash-free 3D model saves huge rework on site. Many of the skills learnt in PDMS carry over directly to E3D.

Ranipet's SIPCOT estate has chemical and process industries, and BHEL runs a unit there, so plant and piping knowledge is directly relevant locally. Larger piping design offices in Chennai and Bengaluru are within easy reach for students from Vellore and Katpadi.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the stages of piping design and how PDMS organises a project into sites and zones
  • Model equipment with primitives, negative primitives, nozzles and parametric templates
  • Position, edit and align equipment using PDMS positioning and model editor tools
  • Create pipes and branches, add components and set specifications and bores
  • Position, orient and connect pipe components correctly
  • Run data consistency and clash checks and fix the issues found
  • Create views, dimensions, labels and layers in Draft and export to DXF/DGN
  • Generate isometrics, spool drawings, nozzle and line schedules and pipe MTO reports

02Why learn it

Why learn PDMS (Piping Design) now?

Six reasons students and professionals in Vellore district pick this skill.

Core tool for plant EPC work

Refineries, power plants and chemical plants are designed in AVEVA tools, so PDMS skills are expected in piping teams.

Full piping workflow

You go from equipment and nozzles to routed pipes, clash checks, isometrics, spools and MTO reports.

Foundation for AVEVA E3D

The model hierarchy, commands and specs you learn in PDMS carry over to E3D, which many projects now use.

India and overseas demand

Piping design centres in Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Vadodara support projects worldwide, including in the Gulf.

Clear career ladder

Piping careers move from modeller to designer to lead, with strong growth for people who also learn piping engineering basics.

Practice after every topic

Each theory session is followed by exercises so you build a working plant model during the course.

03Who can learn

Who can join this course?

BE/BTech Mechanical and Chemical students

Adds a plant design skill that EPC companies ask for.

Diploma in Mechanical Engineering holders

A direct route into piping modeller and draughtsman roles.

Piping draughtsmen using AutoCAD

Moves your work from 2D drafting to 3D plant modelling.

Site and fabrication engineers

Helps you read and use isometrics, spools and MTOs better.

Petroleum and petrochemical engineering graduates

Connects process knowledge to plant layout and piping.

Job seekers targeting Gulf piping roles

PDMS/E3D is a commonly requested skill for overseas piping design jobs.

Before you start: Basic computer use and the ability to read engineering drawings are needed. Knowing basic piping components (pipes, flanges, valves, elbows) helps; AutoCAD experience is useful but not required.

Ask on WhatsApp
What is PDMS?

PDMS (Plant Design Management System) is AVEVA's 3D plant design software. It is used to model equipment and piping, check clashes, and produce drawings, isometrics and material reports for process plants.

Who can join the PDMS course?

Mechanical and chemical engineering students and graduates, mechanical diploma holders, piping draughtsmen and site engineers can join. You should be able to read engineering drawings.

How long is the PDMS course?

Essential in PDMS is a 40-hour programme with alternating theory and practice sessions. The weekly schedule is agreed with your chosen centre.

Which level should I choose?

There is one programme on this page covering the full PDMS workflow. After it, Navisworks or a broader MEP/plant course can extend your skills.

Is PDMS still useful now that E3D exists?

Yes. Many running projects still use PDMS, and E3D shares the same database structure and many concepts, so PDMS skills transfer well to E3D.

Can I learn PDMS online or in hybrid mode?

Yes. Classroom, online and hybrid modes are available depending on trainer availability at your chosen centre.

Is a free demo class available?

You can ask for a demo or counselling session at Katpadi, Vellore or Ranipet. The centre will confirm a slot on WhatsApp or phone.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes. After completing the programme and its assessment you receive a CADD Centre course certificate through CareerKraft, its authorised training partner.

Do you provide placement support?

We provide placement support – resume help, mock interviews and job leads for piping design roles. We do not guarantee a job.

What is the fee for PDMS training?

The counsellor at your chosen centre will share the current fee, offers and EMI options on WhatsApp.

Do I need my own laptop?

No, centre systems are used during classroom sessions. For online mode, the counsellor will explain the system and software access needed.

What jobs and salary can I expect, and which centre can I join?

Freshers usually start as piping modellers or draughtsmen at around ₹2.4–4 LPA, with good growth as designers; pay varies by company and city. The course runs at Katpadi, Vellore and Ranipet, Mon–Sat 9:30 am–6:30 pm and Sun 9:00 am–2:00 pm.
