How to become a CAE / FEA Analyst

A CAE / FEA analyst uses computer simulation to check whether a part or structure will survive the loads it faces in real life. They clean up CAD geometry, build a finite element mesh, apply materials, loads and boundary conditions, then solve and study stress, deformation, vibration or fatigue results. Their reports help design teams make parts lighter, stronger and cheaper while cutting down the number of physical prototypes and test failures.

Most CAE work in India happens in automotive OEMs, aerospace suppliers and engineering-services companies in Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune. Employers look for hands-on skill in a pre-processor such as HyperMesh and a solver such as ANSYS, Abaqus or Nastran, plus solid basics in strength of materials. A fresher who can mesh cleanly, explain results clearly and spot a wrong boundary condition stands out in interviews.

A typical day

• Clean and simplify CAD geometry and extract mid-surfaces for meshing
• Build shell, solid and 1D meshes that meet element-quality criteria
• Define materials, contacts, loads and boundary conditions for each load case
• Run linear static, modal and nonlinear analyses in ANSYS, Abaqus or Nastran
• Post-process stress, displacement and mode-shape results and check them against hand calculations
• Write clear analysis reports with design-change suggestions for the design team
