02Inside the course
What the SolidWorks internship builds on
SolidWorks is a 3D CAD program from Dassault Systèmes. It uses feature-based, parametric modelling: you draw a sketch, add dimensions and relations, and turn it into solid features such as extrudes, revolves, sweeps and lofts.
Working through SolidWorks, you will learn to navigate the SolidWorks interface, Feature Manager design tree and Command Manager, draw fully defined sketches using entities, relations and smart dimensions and model parts with extrude, revolve, sweep, loft, fillet, shell, rib, hole wizard and patterns.
You will work with Sketcher with relations and smart dimensions, Part modelling and multibody tools and Assembly design with mechanical mates; the Certificate in CAM using SolidWorks programme includes modules such as Computer Aided Manufacturing Fundamentals, Feature Recognition Technology and Design for Manufacturability.
Roles to aim for include Design Engineer (Mechanical) – creates 3D models and assemblies for machines, fixtures and products and CAD Draughtsman / Detailer – prepares production drawings, BOMs and revisions from 3D models. Basic computer use is enough to start. Knowledge of engineering drawing, projections and simple machine parts will help you follow the sketching and drafting sessions faster.

What is SolidWorks?
SolidWorks is 3D CAD software from Dassault Systèmes. It is used to design parts and assemblies, sheet metal and weldments, and to create production drawings. It is common in machine building, fabrication and product design.
Who can join the SolidWorks course?
Mechanical, Automobile, Mechatronics and Production students, diploma and ITI holders, draughtsmen and working engineers can join. Basic computer knowledge is enough. Engineering drawing knowledge helps.
