Steel and power plants
Electrical and instrumentation maintenance across steel and power units.
Durgapur’s steel plant, power stations and engineering colleges form one of eastern India’s older industrial belts.

07Study plan
At around seven hours a week, alongside college or work. Faster or slower is fine; finish each project before moving on.
04Your learning path
You will learn to
Project to build: 11 kV/400 V substation SLD. Draw a complete single line diagram of a distribution substation using standard symbols, first on paper and then in ETAP.
Tools covered: Short circuit analysis, Single line diagram (SLD) design, Relay coordination, ETAP, Transformer sizing.
Foundation level: Students and engineers who want a shorter 40-hour version focused on power system basics, single line diagrams and the main ETAP studies.
You will learn to
Project to build: Pump and vessel skid. Model a pump and a vertical vessel with nozzles, position them in a zone and report the equipment list.
Tools covered: Isometric generation, Draft manager, DXF/DGN export, Spooler, Clash and data consistency checks.
Foundation level: Mechanical and chemical engineers, diploma holders and piping draughtsmen who want to start 3D plant piping design.
You will learn to
Project to build: Bottle filling line. Program a PLC to index bottles, fill them for a set time and count them, with a SCADA screen showing the process.
Tools covered: Omron CX-Programmer (CP1E), ODBC, DDE and Excel data export, Ladder logic and Function Block Diagram, Siemens TIA Portal (S7-1200), Mitsubishi GX Works2 (FX series).
Foundation level: Learners who want 64 hours covering two popular PLC platforms – Siemens (STEP 7, TIA Portal, WinCC) and Omron (CX-Programmer, CX-Supervisor).
You will learn to
Project to build: AutoLISP helper routine. Write a simple LISP program that automates a repeated drafting task (Proficient level).
Tools covered: Express Tools, 3D solid and surface modelling, Blocks, dynamic blocks and attributes, AutoLISP and Visual LISP, Layers, layer states and filters.
Foundation level: Beginners who want a 40-hour course in 2D drafting, from drawing basics to layers, blocks and plotting.
05Careers
A piping designer plans how pipes, valves, pumps and equipment are arranged inside refineries, chemical plants, power stations, water treatment plants and pharma units.
Day to day: maintain clearances for access, operation and maintenance; resolve clashes with civil, structural and electrical teams in model reviews.
Skills employers ask for: Coordination with multi-discipline teams; Pipe fittings, flanges, valves and pipe classes; Piping isometrics and material take-off.
Where careers start: Piping Draughtsman.
A power system engineer studies how electricity flows through generators, transformers, cables, lines and loads, and makes sure the network is safe, reliable and efficient.
Day to day: model systems and control behaviour in MATLAB; prepare study reports for clients and site teams.
Skills employers ask for: Power system fundamentals (per-unit, faults, load flow); Short-circuit and protection coordination; Power quality and harmonics basics.
Where careers start: Graduate Engineer.
A PLC / automation engineer designs, programs and maintains the control systems that run machines and production lines.
Day to day: design HMI and SCADA screens with alarms and trends; configure VFDs, sensors and field instruments.
Skills employers ask for: PLC programming (ladder logic, timers, counters); Industrial communication (Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP basics); Electrical and control fundamentals.
Where careers start: Trainee / Service Engineer.

Still have a question? Message us on WhatsApp.
Ask on WhatsAppElectrical power system analysis with PLC and SCADA is common.
Yes. Weekend and evening batches suit colleges.
A steel plant, thermal power stations and a belt of fabrication and chemical units employ many technical staff, and the city’s NIT and engineering colleges feed a steady student population. A sensible order is Electrical Power System Analysis first, then PDMS (Piping Design) once you are comfortable.
Siemens is very widely used in Indian industry and is a safe first choice. Choose Mitsubishi, Omron or ABB if your target company or plant uses that brand; the ladder logic basics are common to all.
Yes. Classroom, online and hybrid modes are available depending on trainer availability at your chosen centre.
You can. Every course is available as a live online class, and learners in Durgapur who want lab time can add an occasional visit to one of the centres in Tamil Nadu.
