06Careers
A piping designer plans how pipes, valves, pumps and equipment are arranged inside refineries, chemical plants, power stations, water treatment plants and pharma units.
Day to day: maintain clearances for access, operation and maintenance; study P&IDs, equipment layouts and line lists for a project.
Skills employers ask for: Reading P&IDs and plot plans; Coordination with multi-discipline teams; Equipment layout and nozzle orientation basics.
Where careers start: Piping Draughtsman.
An embedded systems engineer designs and programs the small computers hidden inside everyday products: washing machines, medical devices, smart meters, industrial controllers and the dozens of electronic control units in a modern.
Day to day: configure microcontroller peripherals such as GPIO, timers, ADC, UART, SPI and I2C; bring up new hardware boards with the electronics team.
Skills employers ask for: Debugging with lab instruments; RTOS concepts; Embedded Linux, drivers and Yocto basics.
Where careers start: Trainee Embedded Engineer.
A network or system administrator keeps an organisation's IT backbone healthy.
Day to day: install, patch and monitor Linux and Windows servers; set up backups and test restores.
Skills employers ask for: Cloud (AWS) fundamentals; Firewall and VPN basics; Monitoring and troubleshooting.
Where careers start: IT Support / Junior Admin.
