01Germany

Germany cars, machines and automation

Car makers in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, thousands of specialist machine-building firms and the industrial-automation companies that equip them make Germany one of the most tool-intensive engineering markets. Indian engineers who move here usually need to refresh CAD, simulation and controls skills, and many start preparing before they arrive.

India is three and a half to four and a half hours ahead of Germany, so an Indian late-afternoon class lands around lunchtime locally, and evening batches in Germany start in the Indian night.

Where the jobs are

Automotive makers and suppliers

Part and assembly design, DMU and tolerance work.

Machine-building firms

3D design, analysis and CNC programming.

Automation and controls companies

PLC programming, SCADA and electrical drawing.

03Joining from Germany

How learning works

German-based learners study live online; Germany is about three and a half to four and a half hours behind India.

Where we teach: classroom batches run at our Katpadi, Vellore and Ranipet centres in Tamil Nadu; learners elsewhere join live online or hybrid batches.

05Your learning path

From Germany, step by step

CATIA 40–80 h

You will learn to

  • Design sheet metal parts with walls, flanges, hems, bends and unfolding
  • Apply dress-up features such as fillets, chamfers, drafts, shells and threads
  • Navigate CATIA V5 workbenches, toolbars, compass and specification tree

Project to build: Connecting rod or crankshaft part. Model a part with pads, pockets, shafts, fillets and patterns, fully driven by constraints.

Tools covered: Sketcher workbench, Wireframe and Surface Design, Assembly Design, Part Design, Specification tree and compass.

Professional level: Engineers and designers who want an 80-hour, job-ready CATIA V5 programme – advanced part design, knowledgeware, large assemblies, advanced sheet metal, surfacing and full drawing detailing.

Siemens NX (CAD, CAM, Nastran) 40–80 h

You will learn to

  • Create fully constrained sketches and parametric solid models in NX
  • Assemble components with constraints, arrays and exploded views
  • Build sweep, blend, hole, slot, draft and pattern features and edit them

Project to build: Gearbox housing and drawing. Model a housing with holes, drafts and patterns, assemble it with covers and issue a dimensioned drawing.

Tools covered: Post processor and shop documentation, 2D, 3D and 1D meshing tools, NX Sheet Metal, Synchronous modelling, Free-form surface modelling.

Professional level: Learners who want an in-depth 80-hour NX CAD programme including synchronous modelling, advanced assemblies, full drafting, advanced surfacing, sheet metal and rendering.

GD&T 16 h

You will learn to

  • Work out maximum material condition, least material condition and virtual condition
  • Calculate bonus tolerance for features of size
  • Explain why dimensional tolerance is needed and how it relates to manufacturing processes

Project to build: Datum set-up for a bracket. Choose primary, secondary and tertiary datums for a machined bracket and mark them on the drawing.

Tools covered: Hole-basis and shaft-basis systems, Bonus tolerance calculation, Datum reference frames and datum targets, Limits, fits and IT grades, MMC, LMC and virtual condition.

Foundation level: Engineers, designers and quality staff who want a compact 16-hour course to read and apply GD&T on drawings.

Ansys (Structural & Fluent CFD) 40–80 h

You will learn to

  • Create or clean up geometry in DesignModeler and SpaceClaim for analysis
  • Generate global and local meshes and fix common meshing problems
  • Run static structural, modal, buckling, thermal and fatigue analyses in Workbench

Project to build: Pressure vessel stress check. Model a pressure vessel, mesh it and find the peak stress and deformation under internal pressure.

Tools covered: Fatigue Tool (S-N based), Ansys Workbench project schematic, Ansys Fluent, Fluent turbulence, species, radiation and multiphase models, Engineering Data.

Professional level: Learners aiming for CAE jobs who want an 80-hour, in-depth path through SpaceClaim, Mechanical, advanced meshing, all major analysis types and optimisation.

06Careers

Roles that fit work around Germany

Mechanical Design Engineer

A mechanical design engineer turns a product idea into accurate 3D models, assemblies and 2D manufacturing drawings.

Day to day: prepare detailed 2D drawings with dimensions, tolerances, GD&T callouts and bill of materials; check assemblies for interference, clearance and motion before prototypes are made.

Skills employers ask for: Clear communication with shop-floor and quality teams; Sheet metal and surface modelling; Basic strength-of-materials calculations.

Where careers start: Trainee / CAD Draughtsman.

CAE / FEA Analyst

A CAE / FEA analyst uses computer simulation to check whether a part or structure will survive the loads it faces in real life.

Day to day: run linear static, modal and nonlinear analyses in ANSYS, Abaqus or Nastran; write clear analysis reports with design-change suggestions for the design team.

Skills employers ask for: Linear static and modal analysis in ANSYS or NX Nastran; Result interpretation and hand-calculation sanity checks; Geometry clean-up and meshing in HyperMesh.

Where careers start: CAE Trainee.

Automotive Design Engineer

An automotive design engineer designs the parts that make up a vehicle, such as body-in-white panels, plastic interior trims, brackets, seating structures or chassis components.

Day to day: model plastic trims, sheet metal panels and brackets in CATIA; work with class-A surfaces from styling to build engineering parts.

Skills employers ask for: CATIA Part Design, Generative Shape Design and Assembly; Sheet metal and BIW design basics; Team communication and design documentation.

Where careers start: Design Trainee.
