01The role
What does a Planning Engineer / Project Planner do?
A planning engineer, also called a project planner, builds and maintains the schedule that tells everyone what must happen, in what order and by when. They break a project into activities, link dependencies, assign resources and costs, and set a baseline. As work progresses, they update actual progress, forecast delays, highlight the critical path and prepare reports that help managers take decisions before small slips become big problems.
Primavera P6 is the standard scheduling tool on large construction, oil-and-gas and infrastructure projects, while MS Project is common in IT, manufacturing and smaller projects. Many planners later add PMP concepts to grow into project management. Construction companies, EPC contractors and consultancies in Chennai, Bengaluru and the Gulf all employ planners, and it is a natural next step for civil and mechanical site engineers who want an office-based, decision-support role.

Still have a question? The counsellor at the centre you prefer replies on WhatsApp.
Ask on WhatsAppShould I learn Primavera or MS Project?
Construction and EPC companies mostly use Primavera P6, while IT and smaller projects use MS Project. Learning both gives you flexibility.
Do planning engineers work on site?
Many sit in site offices or head offices. They visit site to verify progress but mostly work on schedules and reports.
Is site experience needed to become a planner?
It helps a lot, because you plan better when you know how work is actually done. Freshers can still start as junior planners.
What is the critical path?
It is the longest chain of linked activities. Any delay on it delays the whole project, so planners watch it closely.

PMP concepts cover scope, cost, risk and stakeholders, which help planners grow into project management roles.
