01What is OrCAD PCB Design

What is OrCAD PCB Design? In plain words.

OrCAD is a set of electronic design tools from Cadence used to design circuit boards from start to finish. OrCAD Capture is used to draw the schematic, PSpice simulates how the circuit will behave, and OrCAD PCB Editor (built on the Allegro engine) is used to place components, route copper tracks and produce the files a factory needs to make the board. This page covers all three as separate courses.

Every electronic product – a phone charger, a motor controller, an ECU or a medical monitor – needs a printed circuit board. Electronics manufacturers, design service firms and R&D labs hire PCB designers who can build footprints, follow design rules, route multilayer boards and hand over clean Gerber and drill files. Simulation skills in PSpice help engineers catch mistakes before a board is ever made, saving time and cost.

Electronics manufacturing along the Chennai–Bengaluru corridor, including Sriperumbudur and Hosur, needs board designers and prototype engineers. ECE and EEE students in Vellore, Katpadi and Ranipet can also use OrCAD to build proper PCBs for their projects.

What you will be able to do

  • Create projects, libraries and custom parts in OrCAD Capture
  • Draw single-sheet, multi-sheet and hierarchical schematics with buses, net aliases and off-page connectors
  • Annotate, run design rules checks, create a bill of materials and generate a netlist
  • Set up PSpice simulation profiles for bias point, transient, DC sweep, AC sweep, parametric and temperature analysis
  • Run Monte Carlo and worst-case analysis and mixed analog/digital simulation
  • Create padstacks and package footprints and place components on a board outline
  • Route single, double and multilayer boards using the Constraint Manager, vias and copper pours
  • Generate artwork (Gerber), drill and PDF manufacturing files and fabricate a simple PCB

02Why learn it

Why learn OrCAD PCB Design now?

Six reasons students and professionals in Vellore district pick this skill.

Every product needs a PCB

PCB design is needed in consumer, automotive, industrial and medical electronics, so the skill is widely used.

Complete design flow

You go from schematic to simulation to layout to manufacturing files, the same flow used in industry.

Simulate before you build

PSpice lets you test bias points, transient, AC, DC sweep, temperature and Monte Carlo behaviour on screen.

Multilayer design skills

You learn layer stack-up, vias, copper pours and constraint-driven routing for multilayer boards.

Build a real board

The PCB Editor course ends with testing on a breadboard and making a board by toner transfer, etching, drilling and soldering.

Modular courses

Take Capture, PSpice or PCB Editor separately, or all three for the full picture.

03Who can learn

Who can join this course?

BE/BTech ECE and EEE students

Students who want practical board design skills for core electronics jobs.

BE/BTech EIE and Mechatronics students

Learners who design control and instrumentation circuits.

Diploma students in Electronics

Students who want a hands-on skill in layout and board making.

BSc and MSc Electronics students

Graduates who want to design and simulate their own circuits.

Final-year project students

Students who want a professionally designed PCB for their project.

Hardware and embedded engineers

Professionals who need to design or review boards themselves.

Before you start: Basic knowledge of electronic components and circuits is needed. Taking OrCAD Capture before PCB Editor is helpful, because the PCB course imports netlists from Capture.

05Choose your level

Which level is right for me?

Start with OrCAD Capture to learn schematics, then take PSpice if you want to test circuit behaviour before building it. Take OrCAD PCB Editor to turn schematics into manufacturable boards – it works best after Capture because it imports the Capture netlist. Taking all three gives you the complete design flow.
