How to become a Highway / Road Design Engineer
Design roads, junctions and highways from survey to drawings. Learn Civil 3D and MX Road for infrastructure design roles.
01The role
What does a Highway / Road Design Engineer do?
A highway or road design engineer plans the geometry of roads, from village link roads to national highways and expressways. Starting with survey data, they design horizontal and vertical alignments, cross-sections, junctions, drainage and earthwork quantities, following IRC guidelines. The result is a set of plan-and-profile drawings, cross-sections and quantity reports that contractors use to build a safe and comfortable road.
India is investing heavily in highways, expressways and urban roads, so design consultancies and EPC contractors need engineers who can work confidently in AutoCAD Civil 3D and MX Road. The Chennai–Bengaluru corridor passing through Vellore district is itself a major highway project zone. Civil graduates who combine road-geometry basics with software skills can find roles in consultancies, contractors and survey firms across Tamil Nadu and beyond.

05FAQ
Highway / Road Design Engineer – FAQ
Still have a question? The counsellor at the centre you prefer replies on WhatsApp.
Ask on WhatsAppWhat is the difference between Civil 3D and MX Road?
Both design roads. Civil 3D is Autodesk's tool used widely for civil sites and roads, while MX Road is Bentley's specialist road-design tool popular on highway projects.
Do I need to know IRC codes?
Yes. Indian Roads Congress guidelines set design speeds, curves, gradients and cross-sections, and interviewers usually test them.
Are highway design jobs only in big cities?
Design offices are usually in cities, but projects are everywhere, and many roles include site visits and field coordination.
Can a surveyor move into road design?
Yes. Surveyors already understand terrain data, which is the starting point of road design, so the move is natural.
Is MicroStation useful for road design?
Yes. Many highway and infrastructure projects use Bentley tools, and MicroStation is the drafting base for them.
