Every vehicle needs a harness
Cars, bikes, trucks, tractors and EVs all rely on harnesses, so the skill is needed across the auto sector.
Learn how vehicle wiring harnesses are planned, routed in 3D, flattened and documented for manufacturing.
01What is Electrical & Wiring Harness Design
A wiring harness is the organised set of wires, connectors, terminals and protective coverings that carries power and signals around a vehicle or machine. Harness design is the job of planning that network – deciding its architecture, defining components, routing bundles through the 3D vehicle model, adding protection, and then flattening it into a 2D manufacturing drawing with all the details the shop floor needs.
Car, two-wheeler, commercial vehicle, off-highway and EV makers, and the harness suppliers that serve them, employ harness design engineers. Engineering service companies also run harness teams for global clients. Employers look for people who understand harness architecture, design rules and standards and can work in a 3D CAD electrical workbench – industry commonly uses tools such as CATIA V5 electrical for this.
02Why learn it
Six reasons students and professionals in Vellore district pick this skill.
Cars, bikes, trucks, tractors and EVs all rely on harnesses, so the skill is needed across the auto sector.
More sensors, ECUs and high-voltage systems mean more harness design work.
You follow a harness from architecture and components through 3D routing to a flattened drawing.
Knowing bend radius, clearance, protection and documentation rules is what makes a design buildable.
Engineering service firms around Chennai and Bengaluru run harness design teams for global customers.
It suits both EEE/ECE and mechanical/automobile learners.
03Who can learn
Apply electrical knowledge to vehicle systems.
Add electrical routing and packaging skills to your CAD profile.
Prepare for harness drafting and design trainee roles.
Extend your 3D modelling skills into electrical harness design.
Understand how harnesses are designed and documented.
See how power and signal wiring is planned in electric vehicles.
