01The role

What does a Cybersecurity Analyst / Ethical Hacker do?

A cybersecurity analyst protects an organisation's computers, networks and data. Working in a security operations centre (SOC) or IT team, they monitor alerts, investigate suspicious activity, respond to incidents and fix weaknesses. An ethical hacker, or penetration tester, takes the attacker's view with permission, probing websites, networks and systems to find vulnerabilities and reporting them so they can be fixed before criminals exploit them.

Banks, IT service firms, telecom operators, hospitals, government bodies and security companies all need security talent, and Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad host many SOCs. Strong networking and Linux basics come first, followed by hands-on ethical hacking and analyst skills such as log analysis and threat detection. Certifications like CompTIA CySA+ help structure learning. Ethics matter: all testing must be authorised and within legal limits.

A typical day

  • Monitor security alerts and logs in SIEM tools
  • Investigate suspicious logins, malware and network traffic
  • Run vulnerability scans and track fixes
  • Perform authorised penetration tests on web apps and networks
  • Write incident and vulnerability reports
  • Help teams harden systems and follow security policies

Cybersecurity Analyst / Ethical Hacker – FAQ

Still have a question? The counsellor at the centre you prefer replies on WhatsApp.

Ask on WhatsApp
Is ethical hacking legal?

Yes, when you have written permission from the system owner and stay within the agreed scope. Hacking without permission is a crime.

Do I need coding for cybersecurity?

Basic scripting in Python or Bash helps, but networking and Linux knowledge are more important at the start.

What does CySA+ cover?

CompTIA CySA+ focuses on security analyst work such as threat detection, vulnerability management and incident response.

Where do freshers usually start?

Many start as L1 SOC analysts monitoring alerts, then move to incident response or penetration testing.

Can a network administrator move to security?

Yes. Network knowledge is a strong base, and adding security tools and methods makes the move natural.
