01The role

What does a Product Designer do?

A product designer shapes physical products such as appliances, tools, gadgets, furniture and packaging so they look good, work well and can be manufactured at the right cost. The job mixes user research, sketching, 3D modelling, rendering and prototyping. Designers study how people use a product, generate several concepts, refine the best one in CAD and then work with engineers to make it ready for moulding or fabrication.

Tools like Fusion 360 let one person move from concept model to rendering, simple simulation and 3D-print-ready files in a single package. Design thinking gives a clear method to understand users and test ideas quickly. Product designers find work in consumer-goods companies, appliance makers, start-ups, design studios and engineering-services firms, mainly in Chennai and Bengaluru, and many also take freelance projects once they build a portfolio.

A typical day

  • Research user needs and study competing products
  • Sketch concepts and turn the best ideas into 3D models
  • Create realistic renderings for reviews and presentations
  • Build prototypes using 3D printing and simple workshop methods
  • Refine designs for moulding, sheet metal or assembly with engineers
  • Present concepts and gather feedback from users and clients

Skills you need

  • Design thinking and user research

Product Designer – FAQ

Still have a question? The counsellor at the centre you prefer replies on WhatsApp.

Ask on WhatsApp
Do I need to be good at drawing to become a product designer?

Basic sketching helps you explain ideas quickly, and it improves with practice. Most detailed work is done in 3D software.

Why learn Fusion 360 for product design?

Fusion 360 combines modelling, rendering, simple simulation and 3D-print output in one tool, which suits product designers and small teams.

What is design thinking?

It is a step-by-step method: understand the user, define the problem, generate ideas, prototype and test. It keeps designs focused on real needs.

Can I freelance as a product designer?

Yes. Many designers take modelling, rendering and prototype projects from start-ups and small manufacturers once they have a solid portfolio.

What should a product design portfolio include?

Show the full process for two or three products: research notes, sketches, 3D models, renderings and prototype photos.
