How to become a Structural Design Engineer
Analyse and design safe buildings and structures. Learn STAAD.Pro, ETABS and Revit Structure for structural design jobs.
01The role
What does a Structural Design Engineer do?
A structural design engineer makes sure buildings, bridges, towers and industrial structures stand safely under their own weight, people, wind and earthquakes. They build an analytical model, apply loads as per Indian codes, analyse forces and deflections and then size beams, columns, slabs and footings in concrete or steel. Their calculations and drawings are what keep occupants safe for decades, so accuracy and code knowledge are central to the job.
STAAD.Pro is widely used for general frames and industrial steel structures, while ETABS is a favourite for multi-storey buildings. Revit Structure then turns designs into coordinated BIM drawings. Structural consultancies, EPC contractors and real estate developers in Chennai, Bengaluru and across Tamil Nadu employ structural engineers, and Ranipet's industrial estate needs sheds and plant structures. Strong basics in structural analysis and IS codes matter as much as software speed.

05FAQ
Structural Design Engineer – FAQ
Still have a question? The counsellor at the centre you prefer replies on WhatsApp.
Ask on WhatsAppShould I learn STAAD.Pro or ETABS first?
Many start with STAAD.Pro for general frames and industrial structures, then learn ETABS for multi-storey buildings. Both are widely asked for.
Do I need an M.Tech to become a structural engineer?
Not always. Many B.E. graduates start in consultancies, but an M.Tech in Structures helps for complex design roles.
Which Indian codes are used in structural design?
Commonly IS 456 for concrete, IS 800 for steel, IS 875 for loads, IS 1893 for earthquakes and IS 13920 for ductile detailing.
Can diploma holders work in structural design?
Yes, usually as structural draughtsmen or detailers, preparing drawings and bar bending schedules from engineers' designs.
Is software enough to design safe structures?
No. Software only calculates. You must understand loads, analysis and codes to check that the model and results are correct.
