02Inside the course

What the Cybersecurity internship builds on

A cybersecurity analyst is the person who keeps watch over an organisation's networks, servers and user accounts. They read logs and alerts, find weak points before attackers do, and step in when something goes wrong.

Working through Cybersecurity Analyst (CySA+), you will learn to explain the analyst's role, common security frameworks and how risk is evaluated, carry out reconnaissance, OSINT, port scanning and service discovery on a lab network and configure firewalls, IDS/IPS and anti-malware software.

You will work with Firewall configuration, IDS/IPS setup and Packet capture tools (such as Wireshark); the Course on Cybersecurity Analyst (CySA+) programme includes modules such as The Analyst Role, Risk and Frameworks, Reconnaissance and Discovery and Security Appliances and Malware Defence.

Roles to aim for include SOC Analyst (L1/L2) – monitors alerts and logs in a security operations centre and escalates real threats and Cybersecurity Analyst – assesses risk, reviews controls and helps protect an organisation's systems and data. You should be comfortable with computers and know basic networking ideas such as IP addresses, ports and protocols. Some Windows or Linux command-line experience helps; our networking or Linux courses are a good start if you are new.
