Revit vs AutoCAD for Civil and Architecture: What to Learn

AutoCAD draws lines; Revit builds a model of the building. Here is what that difference means for civil and architecture students choosing a course.

Guides

Civil and architecture students are often told two things that seem to clash. One says AutoCAD is enough to get a job. The other says the industry is moving to Revit and BIM, so AutoCAD is a waste of time. The truth sits in the middle, and it depends on the kind of office you want to work in.

This article explains how AutoCAD and Revit differ in the way they work, what each produces on a real project, and how to plan your learning so that you are useful both on a small local project and in a larger BIM team.

Key takeaways

  • AutoCAD is for 2D drafting; Revit builds an intelligent 3D building model.
  • Small and local projects still rely heavily on AutoCAD drawings.
  • Large projects and overseas BIM work increasingly need Revit skills.
  • Most students should learn AutoCAD first, then Revit.
  • Pair Revit with structural, visualisation or coordination tools to grow further.

Drawing versus modelling: the core difference

In AutoCAD, a wall is two parallel lines. A door is a block you insert. The plan, the section and the elevation are separate drawings, and if the client moves a wall, you must update every drawing by hand. AutoCAD is fast, flexible and familiar, but it does not know what a wall is.

In Revit, a wall is a wall. It has a type, thickness, layers, height and a base level. When you place it in the plan, it automatically appears in sections, elevations, 3D views and schedules. Move the wall and every view updates. Count the doors, and the door schedule is already there. This is the idea behind Building Information Modelling, or BIM.

That difference changes the job. AutoCAD work is mostly drafting. Revit work is modelling, and the drawings are an output of the model.

Comparison table

The table sums up the practical differences for civil and architecture work. It is a general guide; how firms use each tool varies.

Where AutoCAD still rules

Across Tamil Nadu and most of India, a large share of residential and small commercial projects are still drawn in AutoCAD. Local architects, builders, site engineers and approval consultants exchange DWG files daily. Plans submitted for approvals, working drawings for masons and quick site sketches are commonly made in AutoCAD.

AutoCAD is also the base for many civil tools. AutoCAD Civil 3D, used for surfaces, alignments, grading and road design, is built on it. Survey data, contour plans and site layouts usually arrive as DWG files. Even in a Revit office, you will often receive consultant drawings in DWG and need to clean them up and link them.

  • AutoCAD is used for house plans, working drawings and approval drawings.
  • Site layouts, setting-out drawings and contour plans are commonly prepared in AutoCAD.
  • Structural detailing such as reinforcement drawings is often drafted in 2D.
  • Civil 3D, which is built on AutoCAD, handles roads, grading and earthwork.

Where Revit is taking over

Larger projects such as hospitals, IT parks, apartments, malls, airports and industrial buildings increasingly use BIM. Clients want coordinated models, clash-free services and reliable quantities. International projects handled from Indian offices, especially for clients in the Middle East, the UK and the US, often require BIM deliverables.

Revit covers architecture, structure and MEP on one platform. Architects model walls, floors, roofs, stairs, curtain walls and rooms. Structural teams model columns, beams, foundations and reinforcement. MEP teams model ducts, pipes, cable trays and fixtures. Coordination and clash detection can then be done in Navisworks, and projects can be shared in the cloud through tools like BIM 360.

This is why BIM modeller and BIM coordinator job titles have become common in Chennai, Bengaluru and other metros, both in design consultancies and in firms that provide BIM services for overseas clients.

Which one should you learn first?

For most civil and architecture students, the best order is AutoCAD first, then Revit. AutoCAD teaches you drawing conventions, scales, line weights, layers, dimensioning and sheet layout. Those skills are needed in Revit too, because a model is only useful if the drawings it produces meet professional standards.

AutoCAD also gets you employable quickly in local firms. Once you are comfortable, move to Revit Architecture or Revit Structure depending on your interest. If you already know AutoCAD from college, you can go straight to Revit.

If your goal is clearly a BIM career in a large firm, give Revit more time than AutoCAD. Learn families, templates, worksets, schedules and sheet setup properly. Those are the things BIM interviews usually test.

Whichever order you choose, practise on one complete building rather than many small exercises. A two-storey house or a small clinic, taken from plan to sections, elevations, schedules and a printed sheet set, teaches you far more than isolated commands. It also gives you something concrete to show at an interview.

A simple learning path for civil and architecture

This path works for BE or BTech civil, BArch and diploma civil students. Adjust it depending on whether you lean towards design, structure or site work.

StageWhat to learnWhat you can do after
1AutoCAD 2D drafting and plottingPrepare plans, sections, elevations and working drawings
2Revit Architecture or Revit StructureBuild BIM models and produce coordinated drawing sets
3STAAD.Pro or ETABS (structure) or SketchUp, 3ds Max, Lumion (design)Analyse structures or present designs visually
4Navisworks, 5D BIM or PrimaveraCoordinate models, estimate quantities or plan schedules

Jobs and indicative pay

With AutoCAD, typical first roles are civil draughtsman, architectural draughtsman and CAD technician. With Revit, freshers apply for BIM modeller and junior BIM engineer roles. Indicative starting pay in Tier-2 cities such as Vellore is roughly ₹1.8–3.2 LPA for AutoCAD drafting and ₹2.4–4 LPA for Revit-based BIM modelling, with higher offers in Chennai and Bengaluru. With experience, BIM coordinators can move into ₹5–9 LPA or more. All figures are indicative and vary by company, city, skills and experience.

Locally, the steady growth of housing, colleges, hospitals and industrial buildings around Vellore, Katpadi and Ranipet keeps drafting work available, while the BIM roles in Chennai and Bengaluru are within reach for those willing to commute or relocate.

Learning at CADD Centre

CADD Centre teaches AutoCAD, Revit (Architecture, Structure and MEP), AutoCAD Civil 3D, Navisworks and dedicated BIM programmes at its Katpadi, Vellore and Ranipet centres, run by CareerKraft. You can learn in classroom, online or hybrid mode, depending on trainer availability, and work on a practice building project so you leave with drawings and a model you can show.

A counsellor can help you decide whether to start with AutoCAD or go straight to Revit, and will share the current fee, offers and EMI options on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp or call the CADD Centre you choose – Katpadi, Vellore or Ranipet – for a free counselling session or a Revit and AutoCAD demo class.

Ask on WhatsApp
Is Revit replacing AutoCAD?

Revit is replacing AutoCAD for building design on larger BIM projects, but AutoCAD is still widely used for smaller projects, site drawings, civil work and detailing. Most offices use both. Learning both keeps you flexible.

Can I learn Revit without AutoCAD?

Yes, Revit does not require AutoCAD. However, you should understand drawing conventions like scales, line weights and dimensioning, because Revit drawings must still meet professional standards.

Is Revit useful for civil engineers or only architects?

Revit is useful for civil engineers too. Revit Structure is used for structural models and reinforcement, and site engineers benefit from reading and coordinating BIM models.

How long does it take to learn Revit?

Basic modelling can be learnt in a few weeks of regular practice. Becoming productive with families, templates, worksets and full drawing sets takes longer, so plan for a complete course plus a practice project.

Which is better for a diploma civil student?

AutoCAD is the most practical first step because drafting roles are common. Adding Revit afterwards opens BIM modeller roles in larger firms.
