05Careers
An HVAC design engineer plans heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems for offices, hospitals, malls, hotels, factories and homes.
Day to day: prepare drawings, equipment schedules and bill of quantities; select air-handling units, fan coil units, chillers or VRF systems.
Skills employers ask for: Heat-load calculation methods; AutoCAD HVAC drafting; Ventilation and fresh-air standards (ASHRAE, NBC).
Where careers start: HVAC Draughtsman / Trainee.
A mechanical design engineer turns a product idea into accurate 3D models, assemblies and 2D manufacturing drawings.
Day to day: check assemblies for interference, clearance and motion before prototypes are made; maintain design revisions and release files through the company's PDM/PLM system.
Skills employers ask for: Engineering materials and manufacturing processes; 3D part and assembly modelling in SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo or NX; Clear communication with shop-floor and quality teams.
Where careers start: Trainee / CAD Draughtsman.
A CNC / CAM programmer converts a 3D model into toolpaths and G-code that a CNC lathe, milling machine or machining centre can follow.
Day to day: post-process toolpaths into machine-ready G-code and prepare setup sheets; study part drawings and 3D models to plan machining operations.
Skills employers ask for: Mastercam or NX CAM operations; Toolpath simulation and verification; Measuring instruments and first-piece inspection.
Where careers start: CNC Operator / Trainee.
